Tinned Fish Saga- Pt. 4

Always Human(ish) -NO AI!

SHOCKER! I am behind on my blogs! I need to stop eating at  new places and write some stuff so I can get caught up!
Going to keep this one short and sweet, and will probably do that more often with the tinned fish blogs from now on since there are not really stories attached to them, they are just quickies.

Technically these were spread across March and April so there’s a few more on here than I would normally cover for one month.

King Oscar: Mackerel in sweet chili sauce

Big fan of sweet chili sauce! Mackerel is a little firmer fish than a lot of other tinned varieties and I have found it to be more “fishy” when cooking it fresh. It certainly has its own flavor but it wasn’t at all like what I know from the fresh fish and the sweet chili flavor with it was divine!

I would definitely try this one again but I am not sure if I would add it to my staples. Add it to rice for a nice quick meal!

A solid 6/10

These ones fought back a bit

La Barca: Mussels in Escabeche

This escabeche sauce ruins it for me again. I love mussels, but I don’t really love this vinegar sauce. It was definitely worse with the last thing I tried (I think that was gar) but it still wasn’t great this time around.

My love of mussels is the only reason this isn’t lower, somehow they manage to save it a little bit.

4/10

King Oscar Salmon Mediterranean style in olive oil

I mean, how can you go wrong with Mediterranean spices and salmon? Answer: you can’t.

This was simply delicious, no other words for it. The olives and peppers included in the can with the fish were amazing and really made this feel and taste like an entire meal in itself.

Perfect for a short lunch break or a camping snack and I think I would like to add this one to my staples.

8/10

Spicy white anchovies

I was expecting a hot spice with these since they are labeled as “spicy” but maybe “spiced” is a better term, as in, the use of spices, not the use of hot peppers to numb your mouth. They were not at all spicy and I am thankful for that! I am not a big fan of very hot foods, though can appreciate *a bit* of spice. These were very pleasant though, and, I think, my first time trying anchovies! They were not at all like what I assume anchovies on pizzas are like (though I have never had those either).

Good tasting snacky fish but they don’t stand out to some other staples.

5/10

Bonus second try of Nuri spiced sardines I snuck in a snack while waiting for the ferry on my way home from a camping trip.

King Oscar Salmon in olive oil with lemon

Once again, hard to mess up with salmon! That said, since I had recently had the spiced salmon, this one was a little bland by comparison. I usually like the simple lemon and olive oil combination but it is better with the sardines and the salmon is better with more complexity. This one was an impromptu snack at the time I had it and I didn’t get further pictures.

6/10

Catarina Ligero: Sardines in ravigote

Another vinegary pickle sauce. I just am not a fan of vinegar! In addition to the acidic flavor for the vinegar, this also had capers in it, which I don’t like for the same reason. It definitely had a very specific flavor profile that would work for some people, but not me.

It was definitely not the worst tin I have had, but not one I care to have again.

4/10

Angelo Parodi: Filetti de Sgombro, Peperoncino e Zenzero= Mackerel with chili pepper and ginger

This was a pretty nice one! Again, the Mackerel is a little firm which makes it feel like it doesn’t soak up the juices as well but it tasted very nice with the pepper and ginger and the whole chili pepper in the can wasn’t very spicy so was a pleasure to eat. I am finding that I am a big fan of big slices or whole pieces of fruit and veg in these tins.

I don’t think I will add this one to my staples, but would definitely eat it again.

6/10

That’s all for now! I am working on a few other foodie entries, a camping one coming soon! And the next tinned fish episode!
